The LG V20

LG V20

The LG V20 is probably the best smartphone I'll ever have. From the very first moment I held it in my hand and felt the solid, cool aluminum back with a touchscreen that responds and feels exactly like it should, I knew that it would be my phone of choice for a very long time.

You see, I bought the V20 in late 2017, months after thee V30 came out. It was more expensive than the V30 by $50 ($550 vs $500) because demand for the V20 was higher than the V30, despite the V30 having better hardware. One exception - the V30 did not give users the ability to replace their phone battery.

The V20 is the last high-end phone to allow user battery replacement. It also features a quad-core audio processor that spins up when you plug in your headphones. Need a remote control? It has an IR transmitter. Drop it? Gorrilla Glass 4 has you covered. The fact that the back pops off allows for better shock absorption when it is dropped (though pieces of your phone flying everywhere does not look good, but when you put it back together and the screen is not cracked, you'll be glad for it).

Another feature is the 2nd screen that is always on when the phone lays on its back. By default it gives you the time and notifications but can also give you shortcuts to the flashlight, take a screenshot, turn on/off Wifi/Bluetooth, etc. When playing media, it gives you the ability to see what track is playing and pause/skip tracks. I don't use it much, but when I do, it's really handy. Newer V-series phones do not have this capability.

One more thing that is awesome about this phone is the camera. It's a true 16 Megapixel sensor that nearly makes my 14MP $580 Canon G1X obsolete. Sadly, I've taken less than 100 pictures with my camera in the last two years because the camera on the V20 is just as good, if not better in certain situations (like macro).
